Stern Tube Line Boring On Passenger Vessel In Saudi Arabian Shipyard
Boring Rectifies Vibration Problem
Namma Shipping Lines, owner of the Mahabbah, a 240,550 DWT Passenger/Ro-Ro vessel, contacted Goltens to investigate and rectify long-term shaft vibration issues. The vessel, over 40 years old, had experienced normal wear and tear on the shafts and resultant damage to all of the bushes.
The vessel would be drydocked at Jeddah Shipyard and Goltens was engaged to perform calibration and alignment checks on the Port and Starboard stern tubes and to line bore the shafts as required.
Goltens mobilized technicians, set up the tooling and performed the alignment checks and reported the results to the owner. Based upon the findings both Port and Starboard stern tubes required line boring .
Goltens fabricated the required mounting brackets to mount the line boring tools and bored the three 1.8, 1.4 and 0.75 meter sections over a length of about 18 meters to the required diameter.
